Teatro Nacional São João announced the rules of the new international competition for its artistic direction, in the wake of a competition that, in late 2024, left void that position in its organisational structure.
The new competition includes a more favourable timetable for the development and presentation of applications, which must be submitted between 1 April and 31 May; a maximum of five candidates shall be selected for a subsequent interview. Besides a descriptive and detailed CV, the applications must include a letter of motivation and a programmatic presentation concerning the position, taking into account the mission and strategic guidelines set out in the TNSJ Mission Letter, which is appended to the competition’s rules. The final decision shall be made by 1 October.
In accordance with the changes in the statutes of the national theatres that were carried out by the Ministry of Culture in 2023, the new artistic director of the TNSJ shall have a term of office of four years, renewable up to two times for equal periods, and their appointment by the Ministry of Culture must now be preceded by an international competition.
The competition jurors, appointed by the Ministry of Culture, are: Pedro Sobrado (chairperson of the TNSJ board of directors and chairman of the jury), Cláudia Leite (member of the TNSJ board of directors), Alexandra Moreira da Silva (professor and theatre researcher), Rui Lage (author) and Salvador Santos (theatre producer and cultural manager).
