The mysterious, mystical figure of the medieval Bluebeard has inspired many authors over the centuries. An extremely intense spiritual relationship between two people in a metaphorical world, which, according to the authors, is a gothic hall, a dark maze where doors must be opened in order for the light to enter. The desire for enlightenment and the fear of it give the opportunity for many different interpretations. The fact that two actors in a one-act production have been able to fill the world's opera houses for more than a hundred years is in itself thought-provoking.
