After four sold-out performances, Homens Hediondos returns to Teatro Carlos Alberto to trouble us anew. Patrícia Portela’s adaptation of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (1999), a book by the US writer David Foster Wallace, is a “both sincere and debauched, almost obscene” solo piece, performed by Nuno Cardoso. Who are these men we see here? Are they dysfunctional, repulsive creatures, or just regular people we daily interact with, like our neighbours, uncles or even our sons? “With this show, we attempt to distil into a single night and a single monologue all of humanity’s anxieties and sorrow.” The outcome of this is a mirror-like play. Will we be able to recognise ourselves, unmasked, in the pitiless image it reflects back to us?
